Speech About My Father

My name is Amanda. I am from Denver, Colorado. I am majoring in graphic design.

I would like to convey a message of hope and inspiration.  When my twin-sister and I were 9-months-old our mother took us from him. My father and step-mother had been looking for us two girls for 26 years; in Aug of 2010 they found us on facebook.

My whole life I yearned to know my father and on June 19, 2012,  I flew here to Alabama to meet my father and made the decision to move out here to spend more time with him and the rest of my new family.

The best day of my life was when I met my father. He instantly became my best friend. A yearning I felt my whole life had been filled and I felt loved by the man I always hoped loved me.

My father showed me what an amazing artist he was.

We shared in our love of history and music by visiting the 3614 Jackson Highway Studio (Muscle Shoals Sound Studio) where Cheer, The Rollings Stones, Willie Nelson and many others recorded and wrote music.

I was  so proud when I found out that my father was in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years.

On November 22, 2012 my life would change forever. I was at work when I got a call, my father was rushed to the hospital. On my way there my little sister who I met this summer was on the other line, it was 3 am, I was 10 min away from the hospital when she said, “Amanda, dad’s gone.”

Many people have told me how sad they think it is that I only had six months with my dad but I think just the opposite. I am so lucky that I was able to pick up and move, know my father , fall in love with my father and say good-bye to my father. I got to be a daddy’s girl, if not just for a few brief moments.

I was able to spend a full day with my father just a few days before he died. I told him how much I loved him and how proud of him I was.  My father told me that our relationship had brought him peace in his life he had never felt.

After my fathers funeral my step-mom told me that my dad said if anything ever happened to him he wanted her to help put me through school because he knew how badly I wanted to finish my education. I hope my father’s legacy can live on through me as I get my education, grow in my independence, create as an artist, discover new music and learn to love myself more.

This was a lovely tribute to your father. Like you, I only knew my birth father for a short time (9 months) before he passed away, but I am so thankful that the Lord brought us back together. During that short time, I came to love my father dearly. He wasn’t a perfect man, but he was a good man, and we loved one another.

I’m so glad you had the opportunity to know your father too. May the Lord bless you abundantly!

    Love,
    Cheryl

  2. What a beautiful tribute to your dad and a wonderful showing of your strength. I’m glad that even in cyberspace, we can still be there for each other in times of need…even if we’ve never met ❤

This was so beautiful yet heart wrenching. Love that you share something so raw with everyone. You didn’t have just six months with him..you have YOUR lifetime with him. He lives in your memory. You are a brave soul.

Very beautIiful! Treasure those memories with your daddy! I’m states away, but I know a good church in Birmingham, AL if you are ever interested. My previous pastor who had a college church is now teaching at the university there, and started another church. He’s a great preacher, wonderful teacher, and a very loving man if you are ever in the area.

  5. While it was sad that you lost him it was even more amazing that you ‘found’ him !!! Diane

  6. I am touched by this tribute. And I am also excited for the pathway that you are on. I send a hug for your loss of a wonderful father, but you have only lost him physically. He will always be looking over you. =)

Beautiful post! I’m so glad you had the chance to know your father. What a great treasure for him to have found you at last and spent his last months with you!

  8. Dave says:

Thank you for such a personal glimpse into your life, Amanda. I am touched in so many ways by the words you wrote and the feelings you expressed about yourself and your father. You could easily have spent your entire life never knowing your father, but you were lucky to have lived in a time when the technology exists that allowed him to find you. What a blessing for the both of you, to be reunited, if only briefly.

Though my story is nothing like yours, there is (at least) one thing we have in common. We both lost our dads recently. My dad passed away just 8 days after your dad, on November 30th. I am still struggling with the loss, as I’m sure you are. Cherish all those wonderful memories you made over those six months.

    Take care …

This is wonderful. When my boyfriend died in an accident almost two years ago, a lot of people were angry on my behalf (at life in general for “taking him away”). I had to explain again and again that there was no need to be angry; I was grateful that I’d been given the time we’d had together and been able to share what would be the last couple of years of his life. So grateful. It’s not an accident that you’re thankful and not bitter. Somewhere, subconsciously or consciously there’s a choice there – and it says a lot about you and I think, good things for your future, that you’ve chosen thanksgiving.

  13. Hi – thank you for following my blog and leading me to your site. Your reunion with your father was very touching. You describe so well how he filled that dark empty space inside of you where you had been missing him. He gave you back half of genes to know yourself better through him. Blessings in your healing journey.

  14. Hi. Thanks for dropping by my blog. This is a sad story but it is to your credit you have valued what you had, no matter how brief. Good luck with your future plans.

After I lost my dad I was complaining to someone that the worst part was that I couldn’t talk to him anymore. My friend said, “Sure you can. He just won’t answer in the same way now.” She was right. You have a beautiful story that I can relate to. Thank you for sharing it.

  16. Beautiful, touching tribute – I am sorry for your loss but also happy that you had the chance to bond as you so beautifully describe.

That is such a beautiful, beautiful story. Written from the heart.

It takes courage to share these feelings and experiences but it is a great gift you give when you do so.

    Thank you.

  21. Number 9 says:

OMG this is such a heartwarming story of how you found him and got to meet him, get to know him and love him before he passed on! My husband was adopted and we met his birthmother but have no idea who the father is. Since I have two sons, sometimes I wonder if they have any genetic traits from their “biological grandfather.” love your story. God is good!

  22. MadBipolar says:

Losing a father is never easy. I know the feeling. I lost my father to cancer when I was only 4 years old and soon after my mother was taken too. She died by mourning his death. The little memory I have of both my parents will live with me forever. I think of them each day.

Thanks for sharing this, it rushed back memories and made me smile.
